Browns look to the past with new uniforms

On Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns unveiled their new uniforms for the 2020 season that pays homage to the Browns teams of the 1940s through the 1980s.

“We wanted to get back to the roots of who the Browns are,” said Executive Vice President and Owner JW Johnson “We’ve heard it from our fans and from our players. We needed to get back to our roots.

“As you look at iconic franchises like the (Cleveland) Browns, the (Chicago) Bears, the (Green Bay) Packers, the (Dallas) Cowboys — they’re true to who they are. They’re not doing a lot of changes and trying to make a lot of flashy moves with their uniforms. I think when we went through the process, it just felt right that we got back to who we are and who we’ll always be.”

The new uniform basically returns the team to the look before the 2015 uniform redesign but on Nike’s Vapor Untouchable template. The stripe pattern from the sleeves before 2015 returns to the new uniforms as does the pants stripe. However, there were a few minor changes. The number font has been updated to better match the Browns’ wordmark. There is no longer a wordmark logo on the chest of the jersey. Lastly, the year the team was founded (1946) was added to the inside collar, instead of “Dawg Pound” which was on the collar from 2015-19.

The Browns’ helmet will continue to be the same as the one introduced in 2015, with the brown facemask, but without the carbon fiber texture in the striping.

The brown jersey with white numbers and the white jersey with brown numbers will be worn with brown or white pants. The primary home look will be the brown jersey with white pants, while the primary away look will be the white jersey with brown pants.

Cleveland’s Color Rush uniform remains brown with orange numbers but now features no stripes on the uniform.
