Falcons unveil “Back to Black” new uniforms

After having their new uniforms leak on Tuesday night, the Atlanta Falcons moved up their uniform unveiling to today. On Wednesday morning, the Falcons showed off their eight new uniform combinations after 17 years in their previous set.

The home uniform features black jerseys with black pants and the away uniform will be white on white. A new “Rise Up” gradient alternate uniform joins the new gear. In addition to the primary and alternate uniforms, the Falcons will also wear a 1966 throwback uniform.

The Atlanta Falcons began the process of designing their new uniforms in January of 2018 with Nike.

“We took a fan-first approach in gathering feedback and design input and have modernized the look of our team and our brand” said Falcons President, Rich McKay. “Black has been a part of our organization since we took the field in 1966 so we’ve stayed true to our roots and have given our fans and players what they’ve been asking for over many years.”

All the jerseys except for the throwback feature “ATL” on the front with a tapered stripe, or “stoop”, down the sides of the uniform as a graphic extension of the wing in the Falcons logo. A drop shadow also appears on the numbers of those uniforms. Atlanta’s wordmarks and font were tweaked to better match the angles of the logo.

The helmet is now satin black, moving away from the traditional glossy look, with a new silver/chrome facemask. The logo decal on the helmet is about 30 percent larger with a chrome outline to match the facemask.

The “Rise Up” alternate jersey features a gradient pattern from black at the bottom to red at the top. The gradient pattern is made using the eye in the Falcons’ logo

The 1966 throwback uniform features red and black stripes on the pants and socks. Due to the NFL’s one helmet rule, throwback decals are used on the satin black helmet. Atlanta plans to bring back the alternate red helmet once the rule ends (which could be as soon as 2021).
