Mizzou to honor TOPGUN program with helmet

On Saturday, the Missouri Tigers will honor our military veterans by wearing a special TOPGUN-themed helmet.

The helmet features elements that are similar to their regular helmet designs, but with a few tributes that makes this look unique. Down the middle of the helmet is a black-gold-black stripe with subtle diamonds in the gold strip. On the back of the helmet is an exact replica of the patch worn by every TOPGUN graduate. The sides of each helmet will have a decal with a Mizzou-colored version of the national insignia. Each player’s area code will be on their helmet in a military typeface to honor the numbering system of all US Navy ships.

(GAMEDAY EDIT: The Mizzou-colored national insignia is only on the left side of the helmet. The Missouri tiger logo is on the right)

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, commonly known as TOPGUN. TOPGUN was created in early 1969 to overcome inadequate aircrew training in air combat during the Vietnam War. The TOPGUN program, currently located in Fallon, Nevada, continues to be the center of excellence for Naval Aviation, continually refining graduate-level tactics, training, and procedures for Navy and Marine Corps fighter aircrew.
