Rutgers football looks to past with new uniforms

On Monday, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football program showed off their latest uniform as they look to their past in this updated design.

The “new” uniform features a nearly identical look as the uniforms Rutgers wore during Greg Schiano’s first tenure as head coach. Returning from the original Schiano era uniform is “Rutgers” in custom block letters across the chest, letters and numbers throughout the jersey are outlined in black. A single color trim is on the sleeve cuffs.

During the unveil video white pants were worn with both the scarlet home jersey and white road jersey. The block “R” logo appears on the right hip.

The traditional scarlet helmet with white facemask and a white “R” logo on each side outlined in black appears to be the only helmet the team will wear with the uniform. The front bumper of the helmet says “F.T.C.”, which stands for “Family, Trust, Chop”.

Rutgers has had a wide variety of uniform styles in between the two Schiano eras. After Schiano left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012, the Kyle Flood era uniforms featured “battle-scarred armor” helmets and a new custom number font. In 2016, the Chris Ash era uniforms began with a toned-down version of the Flood era uniforms for one year before the school switched to Adidas from Nike. The first year of Adidas began with very simplified uniforms and then in 2018, the Northwestern stripes were added to the sleeves and pants (sleeves similar to the New York Giants).
