Chargers unveil new uniforms as they move into new stadium

On Tuesday morning, the Los Angeles Chargers unveiled new uniforms for the first time since 2007.

The new-look comes a few weeks after the team introduced an updated lightning bolt logo, wordmarks and color scheme. All the team’s updates come as the Chargers move into the new SoFi Stadium, along with the Los Angeles Rams, after playing three seasons at Dignity Health Sports Park when they relocated from San Diego.

Los Angeles’ new primary threads no longer have navy blue, matching the updated logo. The numbers have been changed to a font that signifies “speed, power, constant forward motion”. The contrasting panels on the shoulders and pants, which held the lightning bolts, have been removed from all the uniforms to simplify the look.

The Chargers will also add two new Color Rush uniforms to their rotation. The team will keep a royal blue Color Rush uniform and introduce a new all-navy Color Rush uniform. The two Color Rush uniforms don’t feature any powder blue on any of the uniform. The decals on the helmet will be swapped with logos that are recolored to better match the uniform.

Los Angles will have four pairs of pants that go with the uniforms, all of which feature a lightning bolt down the sides. The white and gold will only be worn with the primary home and away jerseys, while the royal and navy pants go with their respective Color Rush uniform.

Lastly, the Chargers will keep their white helmet with the gold facemask. However, the team did add their updated logo and numbers to both sides of the helmet. New wordmarks were added to the bumpers, as well. The facemask will be switched to navy when the Chargers wear their navy Color Rush uniform.

The Los Angeles Chargers took an untraditional route when revealing their new look. Instead of putting out a press release that provided detailed explanations and research, the team took a jab at teams that have done that in the past when they posted a video on social media (watch above).

“Taking inspiration from the subtle curvature of the bolt, we analyzed the ratios underpinning the logo in an effort to craft,” the narrator said in the video, before cutting out. “Nah, who cares. All you need to know is we took the best and made it better.”
