Pirates bring back script on new uniforms

On Friday, the Pittsburgh Pirates unveiled their new Nike uniforms for the 2020 season at PNC Park. The highlight of the new threads is the 1990s era script “Pittsburgh” across the chest of the away and alternate away jerseys.ย

“The Pittsburgh script is a classic look that our fans love, and after hearing from them, we decided it was a great time to bring this design back to our uniform mix,” Pirates president Travis Williams said in a statement. “This design is a tip of the cap to the past for a team that proudly wears Pittsburgh on our chest.”

Before the 1990s, the Pirates only wore script text twice in the club’s history. First in 1938 with “Pirates” for two seasons and then again in 1947 with “Pirates” and Pittsburgh”.

“I dig the new jerseys,” new manager Derek Shelton said. “The thing about it is thatโ€™s, like, in my sweet spot. … Thatโ€™s when those jerseys were being worn, when I was in college. So, yeah, Iโ€™m digging them. Someone told me they like the gray ones. I like the black a lot. I think the black ones look sweet.”

The Pirates also unveiled a new black alternate cap with the classic Pirates “P” in gold. The team will wear the new caps with their new black alternate away uniform.
