Bridgeport’s AHL team changes name

On Monday, the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Bridgeport Sound Tigers announced that the team will be changing their nickname to the Islanders beginning the 2021-22 season. The new name now matches their NHL affiliate of the last 20 years, the New York Islanders.

The Bridgeport Islanders also unveiled their new logo which features the letter “B” with a hockey stick within a blue and orange circle. “Islanders” is placed around the lower arc of the circle. The tape on the hockey stick was designed to resemble the letters “NY” as a nod to their affiliate in New York. Bridgeport’s new uniforms will match the look of the New York Islanders but with the logo swapped.

Note: Bridgeport, Connecticut is not on an island but the New York Islanders have had an affiliate using the “Islanders” name in the past despite not being an island. From 1990-93, the Capital District Islanders in Troy, NY (just outside of Albany) were affiliated with the NHL Long Island franchise.
