Grizzlies’ latest City Edition uniform celebrates Memphis’ music history

On Tuesday, the Memphis Grizzlies unveiled their ‘Memphis Soul’ Nike City Edition uniform for the upcoming season.

Embracing the City of Memphis’ music heritage, the new City Edition uniform celebrates the life of singer/songwriter Isaac Hayes and the legacy of Stax Records.

Vertical stripes on the uniform’s black base represent the grooves in the vinyl records Stax produced. Using Hayes’ 1972 Cadillac El Dorado as inspiration, gold and turquoise are used throughout the uniform. “Memphis” is stitched across the chest in a font similar to the Stax Records logo. The custom “MG” pattern seen on the collar, left side panel and other trim was inspired by African Kente cloth. Above the jock tag is Hayes’ name in a script font.

To give the uniform some final details, the Stax Records logo and Hayes’ trademark sunglasses appear under the flaps at the base of the shorts.
