Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ head coach Bruce Arians caught the attention of old-school football fans and uniform nerds when he made an interesting comment on Wednesday’s edition of the Dan Patrick Show.
“I think once the helmet rule changes next year, we might have some creamsicles and some throwbacks which I think are the best uniforms in the league”, Arians said. “But I think the new ones are going to be really, really sharp. More classical.”
The NFL hadn’t publicly said anything about changing the league’s one helmet rule, which was put in place before the 2013 season as an effort to reduce head trauma (concussions, CTE, etc.).
Arians comments led to this statement from NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy to ESPN, “There will be no change for the 2020 season. There are ongoing discussions for a potential change for the 2021 season, but no decisions have been made.”
With the one helmet rule teams are allowed to change or remove decals on the helmet, but teams are stuck wearing the same helmet shell color for throwback uniforms and other alternate looks.
If the NFL does allow multiple helmets, teams would have the chance to wear classic throwbacks like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ “Creamsicle” uniform, the Tennessee Titans’ Oilers uniform and the New England Patriots “Pat Patriot” uniform. This change could also lead to more controversial throwback uniforms too, like the Denver Broncos’ brown and yellow uniform, the Philadelphia Eagles’ yellow and blue uniform and the Green Bay Packers’ brown fauxback helmet.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson showed his support of allowing multiple helmets with this post on Wednesday night:
