On Wednesday, the Dallas Stars unveiled their throwback look for the 2020 Winter Classic against the Nashville Predators. The new uniform, which was inspired by the 1940s Dallas Texans of the United States Hockey League, mixes both the past and present.
“Our primary goal, the one that we gave to Adidas and the NHL from the outset was: `We want a classic hockey look that is uniquely tied to Dallas,'” said Dan Stuchal, the Stars’ senior vice president of marketing.
The Stars design team for the Winter Classic uniform consisted of Stuchal, owner Tom Gaglardi, director of merchandise Kris Smith, creative director Jeff Neal, and Stars broadcaster Daryl Reaugh.
The group of five went back and forth with Adidas on four basic designs and picked out the things they liked off each design.
“We worked to sort of Frankenstein the best ideas of all of these designs into one,” Stuchal said. “And that’s where we came up with this.”
The group considered using the Texas red and white colors but decided to mix in the present by using “Victory Green” and white. They mixed in the past by using a traditional felt on the crest’s lettering and numbering. They also used vintage silver stitch detailing throughout the jersey.
The crest on the front of the jersey features a Texans-inspired design with the word “STARS” superimposed upon the letter “D.” A star is used in place of the letter “A” in “STARS” as a reference to the Texas state flag. The crest’s details feature silver stitching to create a beveled look.
Dallas’ marketing department also knew how well Texas-themed merchandise sold. So they were sure to add a patch in the shape of the state of Texas on the left sleeve and Texas state flag inside the collar.
To complete the look, the Stars will wear old-fashioned beige pants and leather-style gloves.
Dallas will wear the uniforms on Jan. 1 for the Winter Classic at the Cotton Bowl and then again at home on Jan. 29 against Toronto and Feb. 21 against St. Louis.
