On Wednesday, the UCF Knights unveiled the school’s third edition of their Space Day uniform.
Founded in 1963 as Florida Technological University to support the growing United States space program, the University of Central Florida continues to make an impact in space travel. On November 2nd they will honor that tradition for the third consecutive season when they host Houston (a.k.a. Space City).
UCF’s latest Space Game uniform features many details from space and space travel including the Moon, stars and a rocket.
The hand-painted helmet features the light side of the moon on the player’s left side and the dark side of the moon on the right. On the front bumper are the numbers “321” in recognition of the area code of the Space Coast of Florida, which is just east of the UCF campus. The back bumper features part of Neil Armstrong’s famous quote, “One small step for man.” UCF’s logo appears on both sides of the helmet.
Additionally, the jersey features many space elements on the numbers, collar and sleeves including:
- Constellations representing roads and buildings on campus at UCF, including Orion (the name of the road that circles Spectrum Stadium).
- An outline of the Arecibo telescope
- The flight coordinates “SS50 R-090/31 LC39A” that shows how the 50-yard line of Spectrum Stadium lines up with the exact latitude as Launch Complex 39A, NASA’s most historic launch pad.
- A shape of the planet named after UCF (UCF1.01)
- A large Pegasus constellation on the sleeves where the Pegasus logo would be on their regular uniforms.
To complete the look, the white pants feature a USA mark to match Apollo 11, the rocket that first landed humans on the Moon.
Also appearing on the uniform is the Citronaut, the unofficial first mascot of UCF.
