On Friday, the Detroit Pistons announced the name and logo of their newest NBA G League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise, after purchasing the Northern Arizona Suns franchise in July from the Phoenix Suns.
The Motor City Cruise name and logo honor Detroit’s automotive history, while also pointing to the Pistons look of the early 2000s. Motor City’s new look uses the same classic Pistons colors – red, white, blue and gray – and the current font of their NBA affiliate. The new logo also features firing tailpipes like the Pistons’ former logo.
The team name was selected through a name-the-team contest back in August. Dylan Martin of Grandville, MI won the contest being the first of 10 individuals to submit the name “Motor City Cruise”.
The Cruise will start play during the 2021-22 NBA G League season and play their home games at the new arena being constructed on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit.
The Pistons will end their affiliation with the Grand Rapids Drive after the 2020-21 season.
