Seattle’s new NHL team introduces name and logos

July 23, 2020November 11, 2020

On Thursday, Seattle’s new NHL team officially announced their long-awaited name, logos and colors.

Seattle will begin play in 2021-22 as the “Seattle Kraken”, named after the mythical sea monster. The legendary Kraken is similar to the Pacific Giant Octopus, the largest octopus on earth, which only lives in Puget Sound around Seattle.

“Seattle’s a city with a deep maritime history,” Kraken general manager Ron Francis said. “I think this name embodies a connection with the sea and a curiosity of what lies beneath it. It’s a natural tie to Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.”

The new logo unveiled is a nod to the old Seattle Metropolitans’ “S” logo from the 1910s. The Kraken logo, designed in partnership with Adidas, features a tenticle in the negative-space of the letter and a single red eye of the sea creature.

Seattle’s secondary logo ties in the iconic Seattle Space Needle with an anchor.

The Kraken identity untilizes four shades of blue (Deep Sea Blue, Ice Blue, Boundless Blue and Shadow Blue) and red (Red Alert) as the official team colors.

Seattle’s home jersey was also unveiled during Thursday’s event. The navy blue (Deep Sea Blue) jersey features the primary “S” logo on the chest, like the Metropolitans and the secondary logo on the shoulders. The two lighter shades of blue as stripes and a thin red stripe wrap around the waist and sleeve of the jersey.

Seattle was awarded an NHL franchise Dec. 4, 2018, becoming the league’s 32nd team.
