Buccaneers go back to Super Bowl era uniform

On Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers unveiled their new, yet very familiar uniforms. The new uniforms’ design features a look similar to the Bucs’ look of the late 1990s to early 2010s with simple pants stripes and block numbers.

According to the team, the Buccaneers choose to go to a nearly identical look of the Dungy and Gruden Eras based on feedback from their fans. Their fans wanted to back to the look in the team’s history when they were most successful, winning Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003 and making the playoffs 7 times in 11 years.

Statement from Buccaneers Owner/Co-Chairman Ed Glazer:

“This new but familiar look is a direct result of the valuable feedback we received from our fans. We are excited to return to our classic Super Bowl era uniforms while also introducing a sleek Color Rush uniform that showcases our signature pewter in a new and dramatic way. The refreshed classic design of our home and away combinations bridges our past with our exciting new future, and we are confident it will resonate with our fans.”

Tampa Bay’s new look brings back the darker red the team used before while keeping the same shade of pewter from their most recent uniform. The team considered using the original shiny pewter pants but the fabric used by Nike today is too different to replicate the look.

The primary logo that was redesigned in 2014 remains the team’s primary icon, but with the previous dark red. The ship logo has been slightly updated to fix a small error in the previous version. The decal on the helmet is now a little smaller to ensure the entire logo is visible on all helmet types.

The jerseys numbers feature the same font used from 1997-2013. Also coming back from their Super Bowl era uniform is a black facemask. The uniform features solid color jerseys with pewter and white pants with a black, orange and red stripe down each side. Like the 1997-2013 uniform, the numbers are trimmed with black and orange.

As Glazer mentioned, the team is also introducing a brand new all pewter Color Rush uniform. The Color Rush alternate uniform has its own pewter pants with red and white striping and trim on the numbers. Pewter socks will complete the monochrome look.

For those of you who wanted to see the team return to the “Creamsicle” uniforms from the team’s early history, that won’t happen in 2020. The Bucs’ received feedback from fans who wanted the “Creamsicle” look and promised them that they’ll return as throwback uniforms as soon as the one helmet rule ends (which could be as soon as 2021).

The orange and white uniforms likey weren’t brought back on a full-time basis due to those uniforms being associated with the team’s rough beginning. Tampa Bay went winless in their first season in 1976 and only making the playoffs 3 times and having a 100-223 record in their first 21 seasons.
