After the UCF Knights football team has worn a space-themed alternate uniform the past three seasons (going 3-0), their men’s basketball will join them.
Founded in 1963 as Florida Technological University to support the growing United States space program, the University of Central Florida continues to make an impact in space travel. The UCF Knights men’s basketball team unveiled their new alternate Space Game uniform on Wednesday that will be worn on Feb. 9 against Tulsa.
UCF’s basketball all-black Space Game uniform features many details from space including the constellations, telescopes and the school’s unofficial first mascot, Citronaut. The side panels of the uniform, in the shape of a sword, feature constellations that represent roads and buildings on the campus.
Constellations include:
- Gemini (the name of the road that circles campus and leads to the front of Addition Financial Arena)
- The outline of the Arecibo telescope, the largest fully operational radio telescope on the planet – the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico is under UCF Management
- A shape of the planet named after UCF (UCF1.01)
This is also the first time the Citronaut will appear on basketball uniform at UCF. The Citronaut can be seen on the front of the jersey on the chest, the back of the jersey below the collar and on the player’s right leg of the shorts. A custom Citronaut wordmark appears on the chest as well.
Additionally, the “Canaveral blue” color used throughout the uniform represents the sky and ocean off Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Lastly, the football team’s Space game uniform recently won our 2019 college football uniform of the year.
