Brown is officially back for the San Diego Padres.

On Saturday night, at a fan event at Petco Park, the Padres introduced their new color scheme and uniforms in front of thousands of fans. Three uniforms (home, away and alternate) were unveiled at the event, while two camo (military appreciation) uniforms were unveiled the following day on social media.

The home edition features a white pinstripe uniform with “Padres” across the front in brown lettering and a gold outline. The away uniform features a brown jersey with “San Diego” across the front in gold. Lastly, the road alternates are a gray pinstriped uniform with “San Diego” across the front. All three uniforms have the new Swinging Friar logo on the players’ left sleeve.

“It’s going to be unique,” said Padres’ player Fernando Tatis Jr. “They’re going to know who’s playing right away when they see the brown and gold.”

The redesign process began two years ago as the team experimented with different color schemes and designs. They used a number of focus groups to test the brown and gold scheme to make sure they got it right.

The biggest factor in the Padres’ decision to change their color scheme was that their blue and white scheme was widely regarded as bland and generic. With about half the teams in Major League Baseball wearing a uniform with some shade of blue, the Padres didn’t stick out from the rest. The new “deep, rich brown” and gold now sets them apart from everyone else.

For the first time in over 35 years, the Padres will use brown and gold as there primary colors. San Diego originally wore brown and gold/yellow when they were founded in 1969. They continued with that color scheme through 1984 and then switched yellow for orange. In 1991, they then swapped brown for blue. Since 1999, the Padres have been using blue and white and occasionally blue and gold.

The Padres’ fans have been wanted brown back for years. There was even a petition to change the colors back to brown. And now the fans got their wish.

“People wanted brown and we gave it to them,” said executive chairman Ron Fowler. “Now we’ve got to start winning baseball games.”
