On Wednesday, the Idaho Vandals athletics department officially announce the transition from “Vegas Gold” to “Pride Gold” for their athletics programs. Idaho returns to the “Pride Gold” for the first time since 1996. With the color change, new uniforms were also unveiled.
“I think the new gold livens everything up,” said Anthony Castro, Idaho’s director of equipment operations, licensing and branding. “The Vegas Gold was OK, but it didn’t contrast enough with the silver. It allows us to utilize both of our colors more than in the past.”
With the announcement, the football team unveiled a new road uniform. The new uniform features silver and gold striped sleeves, similar in style to the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers and Big Ten’s Iowa Hawkeyes, and new gold helmets.
Other new uniforms unveiled include a black uniform with gold trim for the men’s basketball team and a white uniform for the women’s basketball team.
All programs will have the school’s “I” logo on the nameplate instead of the player’s last name.
Full uniform unveils for every sport haven’t happened due to the uniform supplying cycle at the school. The football team will wear the same black jerseys it has worn for the past two seasons, while the men’s basketball will wear the same white uniforms and the women will wear the same black uniforms for now.
“Hopefully we have the majority of sports completely converted over by the fall of 2021,” he said. “We’re trying to be smart with our funding and budget as much as we can, so we’ve slowly integrated uniforms. It’s a process, but we’re almost there.”
