On Tuesday, the Florence Freedom announced their new team name, the Florence Y’alls.
The “Y’alls” name comes from an interesting story. Back in 1974, Mayor Hop Ewing decided to repaint the water tower from “Florence Mall” (which opened in 1976) to “Florence Y’all” because it was illegal to have corporate sponsorships on a water tower. They removed the sides of the “M” to make it a “Y” and added an apostrophe.
The Florence Y’alls is an independent professional baseball team in the Frontier League.
